CONNECT

We need human connection to thrive. Being connected to other people, to life, and to the universe around us is how we find meaning and happiness

THE IMPORTANCE OF CONNECTION

We are all in some ways connected, all the way back to our very first ancestors at the beginning of time.

Our need for human connection is inherent in us and the Western vision of happiness (obsessively focusing on ourselves, our immediate families and our possessions) is dragging us away from these connections and into a place of unhappiness and frustration.

There are a number of areas that are critical to our need for connection. These are; - The need for a community. The need for meaningful values (extrinsic not intrinsic), The need for meaningful work. The need to feel respected. The need to feel secure and finally the need for the natural world around us.

HAVE MEANINGFUL VALUES

Our values reflect the person that we want to be. By choosing values that are selfless and borne out of service to others and then aligning our actions with our values, we will find true authenticity and meaning.

Passion comes as a result of doing things we believe in. If we invest in something that aligns with our values then passion becomes the natural by-product.

Communities often work towards common goals and shared purposes. Being involved in these collective efforts gives us a sense of purpose and meaning in life.

Contributing to the community and seeing the impact of our efforts enhances our self-esteem and personal fulfilment.

CONNECTION TO COMMUNITY

Being part of a community provides a support system that helps us cope with stress, anxiety, and other emotional challenges.

Social connections reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation, which are linked to depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues.

Socially connected people tend to have better health outcomes. They experience lower rates of chronic illnesses, reduced inflammation, and better immune function.

Studies show that strong social ties can increase lifespan by providing emotional support, reducing stress, and encouraging healthier behaviours.

Communities often share cultural and social values, traditions, and norms, which helps us to form our identities and navigate our roles in society.

CONNECTION TO THE NATURAL WORLD

Spending time in nature can help us to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. It promotes feelings of calmness and joy, and can even enhance creativity and concentration.

Being in nature helps foster a sense of peace and connection, which can improve mood and emotional resilience. It also provides a sense of belonging and purpose.

Nature can bring people together, fostering social interactions and community bonds.

People who feel connected to nature are more likely to engage in pro-environmental behaviours.

Nature encourages physical activity, whether it’s walking, hiking, or gardening, which can improve our physical health and general fitness.

Exposure to natural environments can improve cognitive functions such as memory and attention. It can also boost problem-solving skills and creativity.

Tips for feeling & staying connected

  1. Be a part of something bigger than yourself. Research shows that 'externally' focused people are happier people.

  2. Align your values with your actions to give your life authenticity and positive meaning.

  3. Make it a priority to stay in touch regularly with family and friends.

  4. Surround yourself with people who share your interests and hobbies.

    • If your work  doesn't give you this meaning right now, then try to find a side interest or hobby that you could turn into our work at a later date.

  6. Treat everyone with respect and the majority of people will reciprocate that respect.

    •  Avoid or distance yourself from anyone who treats you disrespectfully as they will drag you down.

  7. Seek security in all aspects of your life. The feeling of security enables us to stay positive and relaxed.

  8. Connect with Nature as much as you can. Connection with nature enhances our mood, can improve our physical and mental health and can also improve our cognitive functions.

THE NEED FOR RESPECT & SECURITY

Being respected by others helps to boost our self esteem and confidence, helping us to feel valued for who we are & what we contribute.

Our serotonin levels (the chemical our bodies release to enhance and stabilise mood) rise when we have improved feelings of social status and respect.

When we feel respected we are more likely to trust others and build meaningful connections as well as being more open to listening and finding common ground.

We are more motivated and productive in environments where respect and security are prevalent.

When we feel secure we can relax and focus on the positive aspects of life.

Security in relationships fosters trust and cooperation. When we feel secure we are able to be more open and honest which leads to stronger and healthier connections.
